Kojic acid cream: What it does for dark spots and uneven tone



Kojic acid shows up in a lot of skin tone conversations, usually alongside hydroquinone and tranexamic acid, and it can be confusing to know where it actually fits. Kojic acid is a byproduct of fermenting certain fungi, most commonly Aspergillus oryzae, the same mold used to ferment rice for sake and soy sauce, and it has been used in skincare for decades as a way to fade dark spots and even out tone.
Like hydroquinone, kojic acid works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin uses to produce melanin, but it gets there a different way. Kojic acid vs tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid works through an entirely different pathway. Rather than inhibiting tyrosinase directly, it interferes with the plasmin pathway that UV exposure and inflammation use to stimulate melanocytes, which is part of why it is often studied as an add-on to other treatments rather than a straight substitute for them [3]. A systematic review and meta-analysis of tranexamic acid for melasma, across oral, topical, and injected forms, found meaningful reductions in melasma severity scores with generally mild side effects [3]. Comparative studies between injected tranexamic acid and topical hydroquinone have also found tranexamic acid can outperform hydroquinone on response rate [4], though study designs and delivery methods vary enough that this is not a settled question either.
None of this makes any one of the three a "better" or "safest" option in general. Which one fits depends on the type of pigmentation, your skin's tolerance, and what else is in the formula, which is exactly why this is a provider decision rather than a self-selected one.
