BPC-157: What it is, where the research stands, and what the FDA is weighing

BPC-157 has become one of the more talked-about compounds in recovery and longevity, and FDA's 2026 review is the reason it's suddenly a serious conversation. This is a plain overview of what BPC-157 is, what the research covers, and what FDA's review means for whether and when it becomes available through licensed compounding pharmacies.
BPC-157 stands for Body Protection Compound-157. It's a synthetic peptide, a short chain of amino acids (a pentadecapeptide, meaning 15 amino acids), based on a sequence originally identified in a protein found in gastric juice. As a peptide, it's a small biological molecule, smaller than a full protein.
The compound has been studied since the 1990s, mostly in laboratory and animal research and largely around tissue and gastrointestinal healing. Interest has grown considerably in recent years, particularly in recovery and longevity. Interest has grown recently, but its history is mainly one of preclinical research rather than large human trials.
In laboratory and animal studies, researchers have examined BPC-157 in the context of tissue repair, including tendons, ligaments, muscle, and the gastrointestinal tract. It's important to be clear about the limits: most of that work is preclinical or in animals, and there is very little human clinical trial data on either effectiveness or safety. Describing what has been studied is not the same as saying it works, and none of this is a claim about what BPC-157 would do for any person. 2025 systematic review catalogued 544 published studies from 1993 to 2024 across muscle, tendon, ligament, and bone.
FDA had placed BPC-157 in Category 2, its list of bulk substances identified as posing significant safety risk for compounding. In April 2026 FDA removed it from that list, which reopened the question of whether compounding pharmacies should be able to prepare it.
In July 2026, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted, narrowly, to recommend that compounding pharmacies be allowed to prepare BPC-157, along with a few other peptides. Two things are worth understanding about that:
So the status today is that BPC-157 remains not FDA-approved, while its regulatory treatment is actively under review.
Regulatory status isn't a technicality. An FDA-approved medicine has been evaluated for safety, effectiveness, and quality. A substance that hasn't been approved has not cleared that bar, and a compounded preparation is not FDA approved even where compounding is permitted. That gap is why the source matters. A licensed compounding pharmacy operates under defined standards: verified ingredients, batch documentation, and a licensed clinician who reviewed the patient before anything is prescribed. Products sourced outside that system don't carry those assurances.
BPC-157 sits at an unusual moment. Enough research behind it to take seriously, active regulatory movement, and a final FDA decision still ahead. We're building the program now so it's ready when the rule lands.
Is BPC-157 FDA-approved?
